Book Study this Week - Is the World Getting Worse?
by jgnat inthis week's book study is on the state of the world since satan was ostensibly tossed down here to spread his misery in 1914. according to the watchtower society, the world has been steadily declining since that date.
i contend they selectively filter bad news in order to maintain their beliefs.
the world is not necessarily worse today.

About the only thing I would agree with them that is worse is that we now have weapons of mass destruction, other than that our standard of living is so much better than in the past.

Remember when KH's had a piano and real singing?
by WingCommander inthe thread about got me thinking about my very early childhood, back when witnesses were allowed to be social and have get togethers.
they also had a piano in every congregation i ever attended, and an older sister would always play the kingdom melody.
there was actual singing - not mindless droning and humming.

I'm old enough that when I was a kid they still had the pianos on in our hall there was this 30 something bombshell that played. I remember as a young teen thinking lightning was going to strike me for oogling her as she strutted up the aisle to the piano.
Definitely better than the canned stuff that was just coming in when I was getting out of high school and not going to meetings anymore.

The Dog Whisperer
by XJW4EVR ini am sure that cesar millan has been talked about before here.
however, the more i watch this show the more i am amazed at his ability with dogs and other animals.
however, what gets me is that i was using many of his techniques about 15 years ago with my dogs, and never even thought about doing it professionally.. the thumping sound you hear is the sound of me kicking myself.

Interesting question, I had to really think about that one. Nope, I can't say that there is one thing that I have kept from being raised by dubs, I rejected the whole mindset lock stock and two smoking barrels.

JW says Jehovah's People aren't Brainwashed
by Honesty inwell from what i understand a cult is something that expects you to follow some man.
you must give up your individual thought processes and just go with what you are told to think.
this way you are released from individual responsibility.

Let's see, first you are told you are under satan's control, a sinner, with no hope for the future. Hmm, sounds like the tearing down phase to me.
Then you see the "truth" bit by bit and are praised for your maturity and insight. Hmm, sounds like the building up phase to me.
Then you find you are in an elite corps of faithful witnesses who alone have God's blessing. Hmm, sounds like you feel better than everyone else thanks to the WBTS.
Drop and give me twenty maggot!

The number 40 - Is there a connection? Flood, Sinai, Wilderness, Jesus
by truthseeker ini was just thinking today, that the number 40 also seems to hold significance in the bible.
i did some research and found this site.. .
maybe leolaia, narkissos or others can help here and explain if there was any symbolic value that the number 40 held.

When I was an undergrad I took a class called, "The Bible as Literature". The class was taught by a Jesuit Priest. He said that the number 40 was a plug number when the writer didn't know how long it actually was and that was a popular convention at the time. So, anytime there was an extended period and the writer didn't know how long it was, they just said 40 days.

I just love those goofy little catch phrases and buzzwords they come up with, Keep Your Eye Simple indeed, should have called it Keep Your Mind Simple, would have at least been closer to the truth.
